What is Dry Needling (Multitrepannic Collagen Actuation)?

Dry Needling (Multitrepannic Collegen Actuation) preserves the epidermis and stimulates new collagen deposits.  Results are similar to Laser, Chemical Peels, and other Dermabrasion treatments but with less damage to the epidermis.  Ongoing treatments are possible, unlike other commmonly used methods of resurfacing the skin due to the destruction of whole layers of epidermis.  An alternate to laser resurfacing, Dry Needling preserves the epidermis and stimulates collagen deposits in the skin.

After application of a topical anesthetic, ultra thin needle penetrates through the epidermis.  These multiple shallow puncture wounds made through the skin stimulate the dermal layer to produce collagen.  This is the object of all skin resurfacing and rejuvenation treatments.  Dry Needling (Multitrepannic Collagen Actuation) creates minimal dermal damage without the removal of the healthy epidermis.  Because the epidermis is left intact, the healing period is rapid.  The skin does not experience sun sensitivity, skin color loss, hyper-pigmentation or thinning of the skin.

The skin may be red and swollen for a few days with a slight scab covering the treated area.  This often happens with any skin penetration procedure.  However, a light cover of make-up will conceal any marks so a normal routine may be continued.  Outer healing occurs within 4-5 days.  Although some immediate improvement is noted, inner healing (dermis) continues to smooth and tighten the skin for the next 6-9 months as collagen is laid down in a smoother, more regular manner.

Procedures for Dry Needling (Multitrepanic Collagen Actuation):

  • Fine lines and wrinkles may only need one to two treatments.
  • Medium depth wrinkles may initially need two to three treatments, each being 4-6 months apart.
  • Severely deep wrinkles may initially need three treatments or more 4-6 months apart.

Because Dry Needling does not destroy the epidermis, and in fact improves skin texture and thickens the dermis, this treatment can be repeated many times.  This is the only technique to do this.  In comparison to prolonged recovery time from laser and chemical peels, a few days healing period is a desirable alternative.  Dry Needling for scars, acne, and wrinkles has been popular in other countries and its use to improve the appearance of scar tissue is well known and utilized by plastic surgeons in the United States, Europe, Canada, and South Africa.
